SOLAR POOL HEATING

HOW YOU BENEFIT

Get the most out of your pool. You can enjoy it for much longer each season... And you will always save money when you heat your pool with solar.

Solar Pool Heating

Solar pool heating is one of the most economically attractive uses of solar energy available, and, not surprisingly, the fastest growing. There are more than half a million solar-heated swimming pools in the US alone.

Your pool is the focal point of so much pleasure and entertainment for your family and friends. Hours of fun. Lazy relaxing afternoons. Early morning exercise. Pool parties and late evening swims.

And, of course, you notice just how short the swimming season is.

A solar pool heater will keep your pool warm even when it’s cooler outside. You can begin swimming earlier in the spring, and extend the season well past late summer. You know those are some of the nicest days to enjoy your pool if you can just get the chill out of the water.

Solar is the most cost-effective way to heat your pool.

Let’s look at an estimated example, taking account of both initial and operating costs...

Gas Pool Heater   Solar Pool Heater
Gas Pool Heater     $5,000     $Zero
Initial cost     $2,500     $5,000

Costs over 5 years   $7,500   $5,000

But the life of your solar pool heater is well over five years...

Gas Pool Heater   Solar Pool Heater
10 Year operating cost     $10,000     $Zero
Initial cost     $  2,500     $5,000

Costs over 10 years   $12,500   $5,000

Although the manufacturer’s full warranty is 12 years (with a limited lifetime warranty), these solar pool heaters are expected to last more than fifteen years...

Gas Pool Heater   Solar Pool Heater
15 Year operating cost     $15,000     $Zero
Initial cost     $  2,500     $5,000

Costs over 15 years   $17,500   $5,000

A properly installed solar pool heating system requires very little or no maintenance. Regular maintenance of the pool and its filtration system is all that’s needed.

There are a number of reasons why the economics of solar pool heating are so favorable.

  • The water temperature only needs to be raised a relatively small amount. The temperature just before or after the normal swimming season is usually about 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, so an increase of 10 or 12 degrees results in very comfortable pool for swimming. (This is substantially less than the 50 to 60 degree Fahrenheit increase required for household hot water).
  • Very efficient solar collectors can be used because of the relatively low temperatures involved.
  • A storage tank is not required and the pool’s filtration pump is usually used to pump water through the system
  • A back-up system is not usually needed, as most of your swimming will be during the day when the sun is shining. The water will be warm enough to swim at night and will reheat the following day; and, of course
  • Fossil fuels, required to run alternative pool heating systems, are so expensive.

Solar pool heating systems are very simple. You will be able to heat your pool safely, reliably and effectively year after year after year.

And if you sell your home, the value of your pool will be enhanced by having a no cost, low maintenance means of heating it. Whoever owns your home will benefit from a longer swimming season at the most enjoyable temperatures without paying costly heating bills.
